What is the IELTS Examination?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is designed to help you work, study or migrate to a country where English is the native language. This includes countries such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and USA.


More than 30 million IELTS tests have been taken since the test was first created in 1989. Every week, on average, an incredible 60,000 people take an IELTS test. The global availability of IELTS are at over 1,200 test centers in more than 140 countries and territories as of March 2019. IELTS plays a leading role in international higher education. It is recognized for entrance to universities and colleges across the
English-speaking world, including 100% of universities in Australia and the United Kingdom, more than 3,400 institutions in the United States as well as hundreds of institutions in many other countries. It is also the most widely used test for visa and citizenship purposes in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.


Your ability to listen, read, write and speak in English will be assessed during the test. IELTS is graded on a scale of 1-9.  IELTS is jointly owned by British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment English.

IELTS types

IELTS Academic

The IELTS Academic test is suitable for those wanting to study in an English-speaking environment for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate studies in universities/colleges. This can also be for professional registration purposes.

The IELTS Test is jointly owned by three respectable, international officialdoms: British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge English Language Assessment.

IELTS General Training

The IELTS General Training test is suitable for those applying to study below degree level. This includes an English-speaking school or college. It can also be taken for work experience or other employment training.

IELTS General Training is typically required for migration to Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK. The test features everyday English language skills that you will need in social and workplace environments.
